Contractor License Requirements
To apply for a California contractor’s license, you need to meet specific requirements:
- Experience: You must have at least 4 years of full-time experience at a journeyman level within the last 10 years. This means you should be able to perform the duties of your trade independently, having completed any necessary training or apprenticeship.
- Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a license. However, due to the experience requirement, it’s often beneficial to be at least 23 years old when applying.
- Social Security Number or ITIN: A valid Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is required for your application.
What If You Don’t Have 4 Years of Experience?
If you don’t yet have 4 years of journeyman experience, don’t worry! A college degree in a relevant field can count toward up to 3 years of this requirement. Additionally, any self-employed experience within the trade will be accepted by the state.
